Bursaries and Scholarships for Home and EU Students

We are aware that with the introduction of tuition fees many students are confused as to what financial support is available. This page outlines the funding opportunities available through bursaries and scholarships from the University, which are in addition to any Government support you may receive.

Bursaries

Bursaries are designed to provide financial assistance for students so that they can attend university, they are non-repayable and will be paid direct into your bank account.

Bursaries of up to £1000 are available from the University and are in addition to any Government grant.  These bursaries are means tested and based on residual household income.  Application for assessment is through your Local Education Authority who will inform us of your financial status and hence eligibility for one of our bursaries. The University income bands are as follows:

A residual income of up to £22,500 means you can be eligible for a bursary of £1000 per year.

A Residual income between £22,501 and £37,425 means you can be eligible for a bursary of £500 per year.

It is worth noting that studying at the University of Hull offers exceptional value for money.  On average, the approximate annual cost of student living is £7500 in London, £6500 outside London and just over £5000 in Hull and Scarborough – good news when you are living on a student budget!

Scholarships

Scholarships are designed to reward academic excellence. Depending on your achievements, you could be eligible for a non-repayable payment of £1500 per year for at least two years. The scholarship may be extended for the duration of your course depending on your performance.

Applicants who achieve three A levels at grade ABB or above (excluding General Studies) and who choose Hull as their first choice university will receive a Sir Brynmor Jones Scholarship of £1500 per year for at least two years with the possibility of it being extended for the duration of your course depending on performance.  You do not need to apply for the scholarship; it will be awarded on confirmation of your results in August by UCAS. Applicants with unconditional offers, who meet the criteria, will receive confirmation after UCAS has confirmed Hull as their first choice.

The University also awards scholarships to entrants who do not possess A Levels but who have performed with excellence in other qualifications or who have special circumstances that they believe should be taken into account when determining if they are eligible for a scholarship. If you do not possess A Levels and would like to apply for a scholarship, please contact the Department.

Notes on Eligibility

  • There are no age restrictions on eligibility for bursaries and scholarships.
  • Applies to full-time on-campus undergraduates only.
