MEng Degree Programmes

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is an MEng?

An MEng (Master of Engineering) is a higher degree qualification on a par with a taught MSc (Master of Science) degree.

Q: What kind of MEng courses are there?

There are three MEng courses, each of them draws on expertise in the Department which has been used to create taught MScs in their particular study areas:

MEng Computer Science

MEng Computer Science with Games Development

MEng Computer Software Development

A breakdown of the content can be found here.

Q: What will an MEng do for me?

An MEng qualification is recognised by employers and academic institution as being at a higher level of attainment and specialisation than an undergraduate bachelor level degree. The MEng courses at Hull aim to increase your employability by providing more in-depth study of current technology and providing you with skills specifically sought in the workplace.

Q: Is the MEng qualification accredited by a professional body?

Accreditation can only be sought for a course once the first cohort of students have graduated.  We’ll be applying to the British Computer Society for retrospective accreditation in June 2007.  Accreditation has already been gained for the first three years of study.

Q: How much does it cost to undertake an MEng?

An MEng will cost the same as a four year taught degree. Unlike a traditional BSc plus MSc route the MEng qualifies for LEA funding in the fourth year.

Q: How long will the course take?

The MEng is a four year course.

Q: When do I graduate?

You would graduate at the end of the fourth year, which would normally be in the summer degree ceremony.

Q: How will my MEng degree classification be calculated?

The classification will be calculated using a weighting from the marks from the last three years of the course, according to the following:

Diploma stage (year 2): 15%
Honours stage (year 3): 25%
Masters stage (year 4): 60%

An MEng programme is awarded the same classification as an undergraduate BSc programme ie 1st, 2(i), 2(ii), 3rd.

Q: What is the assessment procedure for an MEng?

The final year of a four year taught MEng would be assessed in exactly the same way as other modules in the taught course. The assessment would be on a mix of examination performance and assessed practical work, with the same degree classifications as for an undergraduate BSc degree.

Q: What do I need to do to be accepted onto the course?

If you are not presently attending university you can apply for the course as you would any other taught degree. The courses have UCAS codes and if you apply to study on one of them you will be invited to take part in our admissions process, from which an offer of a place (which may be conditional on performance in relevant qualifying examinations such as A levels) will be generated.

Q: What if I am already a student at Hull University?

The MEng courses are also open to students in the Department Computer Science at the University Hull who are currently registered on the Computer Science, Software Engineering or Games Development degrees. If a student has attained a year average of 50% or greater in their second year of studies (Diploma Stage) they can apply to be admitted onto the corresponding MEng course in their third year.

Q: What if I am accepted onto an MEng and then change my mind?

Once registered on an MEng programme it is possible to transfer to the corresponding 3 year BSc programme provided this is completed before the end of year 3 (Honours stage).

 Q: I have another question?

Email your question to meng_questions@dcs.hull.ac.uk and we will get right back to you. If it is a good question we will add it to this list!
