Computer Science Undergraduate Admissions

Puzzle

Computer Scientists like puzzles. Here is one of my favourites:

You are taking part in a game show. You have won the star prize, which is either a car or a goat. The presenter shows you three doors. Two of them have goats behind them; the other has a car behind it.

You are invited to pick a winning door. When you have picked your door, the presenter opens one of the remaining two doors, and shows you the goat behind it. There are now two closed doors. One of them has a goat behind it, and the other the car. He now gives you the chance to switch your guess to the other closed door (i.e. the one that you didn't pick initially).

The question is:

Do you switch your guess?

This conundrum has resulted in much argument and discussion in the department, but I can reveal that there is a "correct" answer and that if you use it you can give yourself a 66% chance of getting the car! Send an email to admissions for our take on the correct answer.
