What is Computer and Business Informatics?

Informatics is the science which encompasses the collection, storage, retrieval and processing of information. Our BSc degree in Computer and Business Informatics focuses on the central role of information technology in informatics and on the ways in which computer systems and informatics support business. Graduates of this programme will be able to provide cost-effective integrated information solutions to meet the needs of computer users.

We offer two variants: Single Honours, and a course with a foundation year (for those who need to consolidate their background in English language or in science before beginning a computer science programme).

Structure

This course has some commonality with our new Information Technology Management for Business degree, so students can switch programmes at the start of the second year if they wish to follow a combined IT and business skills pathway. This degree covers the fundamental aspects of the subject (programming, software development, business systems, quantitative methods, accounting and finance, information systems and professional skills) through a combination of core and optional modules.

What is the foundation route?

In addition to our standard three-year BSc programme, we also offer a four-year programme in which the standard three years of study follow a preliminary foundation year. Studies during that year include mathematical topics, introductory information technology and programming, and a choice of options in science and technologies.

The on-campus foundation year is an integral part of four-year degree programmes throughout which you are registered as a student of the University, with full access to campus facilities, accommodation and funding entitlements.

The programme is designed to provide a route into degree-level study of computing for applicants who do not offer qualifications suitable for direct entry but who nevertheless demonstrate the potential for success.
